Spa Treatments to Help You Detox After The Festive Season

January 16, 2019

They certainly don’t call the festive season festive for nothing! Celebrating with friends, eating delicious food and sipping on yummy cocktails (probably more than usual!) and, if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, spending a lot of time frolicking in the sun.

And while the festive season should undoubtedly be celebrated, it dies tend to affect your body and skin in some way or another.

The excessiveness of the festive season and all it entails can potentially have a negative effect on your skin and body. That’s why January is the perfect time to give your skin and body a little extra TLC by detoxing - so you can start the new year of refreshed.

Naturally, there are dozens of ways to detox your skin and body, and different treatments will work for different people. However, there are a few essential spa treatments that are guaranteed to make your skin and body feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Some of these will best be done at a spa, while others you can even do in the comfort of your own home.

Lymphatic Drainage
Lymphatic drainage is the base of any detox treatment. Whether its a facial or a massage, when a detoxifying spa treatment is performed, it is usually all related to your body’s lymphatic drainage system.

What is your lymphatic drainage system you may ask? In layman's terms, it is the system which your body uses to cleanse itself from toxins and impurities by making use of your lymph nodes. These nodes are located at various places in your body.

The lymphatic drainage system transports lymph - which is a fluid that contains white blood cells - through the body. White blood cells help to fight infections and thus helps to eradicate toxins and impurities.

There are various ways in which to aid your lymphatic drainage system, one of which is through a lymphatic drainage massage.

A popular detoxifying spa treatment, a lymphatic drainage massage will involve the spa therapist activating and stimulating your lymphatic drainage system by deeply massaging your whole body and stimulating blood and lymph flow. This helps to eliminate waste (toxins) and excess fluids.

There are also ways of aiding your lymphatic drainage system at home through simple stretches and self-massage.

You can do a few easy stretches after which you can gently massage yourself on your lymph spots: your temples, the back of your neck, groin and under your arms.

Another great tip to stimulate the lymphatic drainage system, is to lie flat on your back with your legs up against a wall. This helps the system by circulating lymph fluid and clean blood through your body.

Once you’ve done either of these at home treatments, you can treat yourself to a nice, warm bath.

Purifying, Cleansing Facial
Give your skin a headstart to 2019 by investing in a deep cleansing, purifying facial. After the festive season and all it entails (hello, sun exposure!) it’s only natural that your skin can do with some purification.

A purifying, deep cleanse facial will not only unblock your pores and stimulate blood flow to your skin (which, in turn promotes collagen production so needed after spending time outdoors) but it will also give you a natural glow.

Visiting a spa and be treated by trained spa therapist will be your best bet in this case. They will also be able to give you advice on how to care for your skin post facial, so that you can retain that glow all summer long.

Body Wrap
Some people prefer seaweed wraps or hot towel wraps or some kind of new age wrap. Whichever you prefer, the point is: a body wrap is one of the best ways to detox your skin from head to toe and truly feel rejuvenated.

A body wrap will help stimulate your lymphatic drainage system. This will cause your body to sweat out impurities and toxins, which is the best way to start a detox journey.

Not only will a body wrap help you sweat out impurities and lingering toxins, it will also hydrate your skin. Giving it the moisture boost it will certainly need after spending more time outdoors.

Pro tip: make sure you exfoliate your entire body before getting any kind of body wrap. This will help to get rid of dead skin cells and allow for optimal moisture to the skin.

Sauna & Steam Room
Perhaps the most obvious of all detox ‘treatments’, a trip to the sauna or steam room can do wonders for detoxing your body.

Just as a body wrap will stimulate your body’s lymphatic drainage system, heat and moisture in a sauna or steam room will help your body sweat out toxins and impurities. Some spas offer both a sauna and steam room or steam bath. The trick is to find out which one will work best for you, as some people can easily start to feel a little dizzy and uncomfortable in either.

If you’re feeling all fired up and ready for a detox, you can book an appointment at the gorgeous and oh-so luxe Mint Wellness Spa at either The Bay Hotel or our own Camps Bay Retreat in Camps Bay.

Their menu includes amazing detox treatments such as purifying facials, lymphatic drainage massages and they have a sauna and steam room!
